Stephin Merritt interview and ukulele version of The Nun’s Litany

Finally, Strange Powers, the documentry about Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields, is available to digitally rent on iTunes and lovefilm.com.  I missed the theatre screening in London and have been desperate to see it.

In honour of this, here’s a really old interview where he plays The Nun’s Litany on an 8 string mele ukulele.  It’s a lovely version of the song and Stephin Merritt is his normal deadpan self.

There might be a reduced service on ukuleleporn for the next month as I’m off for on an extended holiday to the other side of the world.  Hopefully I’ll find some ukulele stuff there that I can write about.

Enjoy.

The chords are at stephinsongs, along with the rest of their albums, but you’ll have to look up the uke chords if you don’t know them.

Elvis – Blue Hawaii

I received this as a present on vinyl.  I must admit, I’ve never seen the film but I think the soundtrack’s a good place to start.  Includes the songs, Aloha Oe, written by Hawaii’s answer to Queen Latifah, and I Can’t help falling in Love (not really Hawaiian at all).  Also, it has a very cool cover with Elvis sporting an Hawaiian shirt.

The Mills brothers – I ain’t got nobody

The Mills Brothers originally played the song, You Always Hurt The One You Love, many years ago.  You might recognise that song as Ryan Gosling’s character plays it on a ukulele in the film, Blue Valentine.  But they’re a great group and they have had a ukulele in the group at an earlier stage in their career.  I’m not sure in the below video if it’s a ukulele or a tenor guitar.  Anyway, this is, I suppose, a good antidote to valentines day.

Celetano cupcake ukulele

This is slightly late but ukulele porn is now a year old.  I have another post I want to write about this as the site gets some pretty strange keyword searches, but for today, this astonishing cupcake ukulele seems very apt for the occasion.  I want a celentano ukulele so much I just need to decide which one.
